BizLink is a program offered by Community Futures offices across Simcoe County. Washing Well Laundromat accessed the program through North Simcoe Community Futures Development Corporation (NSCFDC) in Midland.
When Melissa Maurice initially toyed with the thought of dipping her toe into entrepreneurship, she never imagined she would be so excited about dirty laundry!
Maurice is the new owner of Washing Well Laundromat at 727 William Street in Midland, Ontario. Far from the stereotypical laundromat, Washing Well is a clean, safe, bright and friendly space with free WiFi, an onsite attendant and 24/7 surveillance.
"We're a family-owned business and operate a community-centered laundromat focused on providing a welcoming environment," says Maurice. "We're proud of our judgement-free and small-town community vibe."
Maurice explains, "My goal is to make our laundromat feel like your laundry room." Twenty-three washers of various sizes, a 60lb large capacity machine and even a dedicated industrial washer for equine laundry and pet beds make quick work of laundry chores. Washing Well boasts a wash and fold service, pickup and delivery, with an onsite soap and a snack vending machine.
"I've always had an entrepreneurial spirit," says Maurice, "but I didn't know anything about the legal and financial aspects of buying or running a business. I was excited and scared at the same time." That's when a close friend urged her to book an appointment with the North Simcoe Community Futures Development Corporation (NSCFDC).
Maurice accessed their BizLink Program, which connects new entrepreneurs with retiring owners and guides the parties through the business transition. This unique program aims to develop successful entrepreneurs with wrap-around support, helping to create employment opportunities and stimulate the local economy.
North Simcoe Community Futures Development Corporation, located at 105 Fourth Street in Midland, is one of four local community futures offices offering the BizLink program. They also help local entrepreneurs succeed by offering loans, free business services, training, resources and mentoring to start, grow, buy or sell a business.
"I had driven by their building before and wondered what they provided and how they could help. I knew I needed information, guidance and financial assistance to be a confident, successful and profitable business owner," says Maurice.
"Walking into the NSCFDC was the best decision I made," she states. Maurice took advantage of their business coaching and resources, which assisted her with a business and marketing plan, forecasting, budgeting, bookkeeping and more.
"With their expert advice and guidance, I was able to get a loan to purchase the business and some operational capital to help with the day-to-day operations along with some necessary upgrades," says Maurice. She secured a low-interest loan, with the first few months being interest-free.
"If not for the NSCFDC, I would have had to go to a traditional financial institution like a bank or even give up on my hopes of owning a laundromat. However, my experience would not have been the same. The consultants at NSCFDC understand the local community, and I feel like I have a personal business mentor who is always available when I have questions or concerns."
With the NSCFDC's continued support, Maurice has developed the confidence and motivation to implement and prioritize strategies, resulting in the healthy growth of her business. "I've even been able to hire full and part-time staff, especially during the summer when tourists, boaters, bed and breakfasts and resorts are in full swing."
Maurice is bursting with future expansion plans. She wants to continue developing the friendly feel of Washing Well by offering delicious coffee and fresh baked goods. She says, "My dream is to be a community gathering place where laundry and literacy co-exist, engaging children and families to read, play and learn while waiting for their laundry."
Maurice is adamant, "I want to make Washing Well a community hub where locals, tourists and neighbours can relax and connect with others."
"I'm excited to be a part of the thriving Midland business community and deeply grateful to the experts at NSCFDC for their guidance and resources. They've been instrumental in helping me realize my entrepreneurial dream."
Maurice advises, "I highly encourage anyone considering starting, buying or expanding their business to connect with North Simcoe Community Futures Development Corporation so they have the solid business foundation for entrepreneurial success."
